How to move the SurveyGold application and data to a different computer

The following step-by-step instructions describe how to move your SurveyGold application and existing data to another computer.

This need typically arises in one of the following contexts:
  • Computer Change: You get a new computer and you want to move your existing SurveyGold application and data to your new computer.
  • Job Change: You are no longer responsible for using SurveyGold (e.g., job change) and you want to move your existing SurveyGold application and data to a computer used by another person who will assume responsibility for using SurveyGold.

Step-By-Step Guidance
In the instructions that follow, the computer that already has the SurveyGold application installed is referred to as the "old" computer. The different computer that you want to move the SurveyGold application to is referred to as the "new" computer.
  1. On the new computer, download and install SurveyGold application. Do not attempt to register this newly installed application. If you happen to launch the SurveyGold application, close it.

  2. On the old computer, make sure that the SurveyGold application is closed. Then, use File Explorer to navigate to the SurveyGold database folder location (the location is described in this knowledge base article).

    Tip: You can easily launch File Explorer by holding down the Windows key and pressing the E key.

  3. On the old computer, use using File Explorer, locate the survey.db file and move it (do not COPY the file...MOVE the file) to a place where it can be accessed by the new computer.

    For example, you could move the survey.db file a network-accessible folder (if you are in a corporate setting) or to a USB drive (if you are in a place without a network), or you could move the file to a cloud-based file storage service like DropBox, Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive

    Important: Do not copy the file. Move the file. This permanently removes the database file from the old computer, which is critically important in this process.

  4. On the new computer, make sure that the SurveyGold application is closed. Then, use File Explorer to navigate to the database folder location (the location is described in this knowledge base article).

  5. On the new computer, use File Explorer to delete the existing survey.db file.

  6. On the new computer, use File Explorer to move the survey.db from the location you placed it in step 3 to the folder location (the location is described in this knowledge base article).

  7. On the old computer, use the Uninstall a Program action in the Windows Control Panel to uninstall the SurveyGold application.

  8. On the old computer, use File Explorer to delete the SurveyGold database folder (the location is described in this knowledge base article).

  9. On the new computer, launch the SurveyGold application and the existing survey data from the old computer will appear in the application.
The survey data and subscription registration data is now successfully installed on the new computer.

Note: If the existing survey data does not appear in the SurveyGold application on the new computer in step 9, then refer to this knowledge base article for further guidance.

Additional Guidance for Job Change
If someone other than you is assuming responsibilities for using the SurveyGold application, it is advisable to change the email address preference so that notifications pertaining to online survey responses are emailed to the new SurveyGold user:
  1. In the SurveyGold application on the new computer, select Help
  2. Select Change Application Preferences 
  3. Select the Email tab
  4. Enter the email address of the new SurveyGold user and select OK
